Eswatini monarch praises Taiwan’s helicopter gift and pilot training during Tainan visit

King Mswati III thanked Taiwan for the 2020 donation of two UH-1H helicopters and the training of Eswatini pilots during his visit to a Tainan aviation centre.

Visiting Taiwan for his twentieth trip since 1986, King Mswati III toured the Army Aviation and Special Forces Command’s Flight Training Command in Tainan with President Lai Ching-te. The monarch and Inkhosikati Make Zuma examined two retired UH-1H helicopters that Taiwan handed over to the Umbutfo eSwatini Defence Force Air Wing in 2020 and used a simulator to experience flight controls. Lai noted that between 2019 and 2020 the Tainan unit trained eleven Eswatini pilots and maintenance personnel, and he thanked the staff for strengthening bilateral ties.

Mswati highlighted the helicopters’ importance for transporting patients in urgent medical situations and praised Taiwan’s growing aviation capabilities. He also attended a joint ground-air exercise, visited an agricultural research centre, and will attend an investment dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung before departing on Oct. 17.
