EU and Ukraine set up joint task force to speed rule-of-law reforms

The European Union and Ukraine have created a new joint task force to accelerate progress on rule-of-law and anti-corruption benchmarks essential for Ukraine’s EU accession.

On October 16, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos revealed that Ukraine and the European Union will launch a joint task force to hasten rule-of-law and anti-corruption reforms required for EU accession. The new body, consisting of Ukrainian and European Commission officials, will hold regular meetings to address interim benchmarks outlined in the accession process. Kos said the step follows the opening of two additional negotiating clusters and reflects a commitment to Ukraine’s membership path.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking to EU leaders, stressed the goal of securing a swift positive assessment through coordinated actions. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi affirmed Ukraine’s continued drive for reforms, noting that all six negotiating clusters are expected to be opened by the end of 2026. The task force will work with prepared documents to ensure concrete, joint decisions.

Why it matters

The task force aims to fast-track reforms that are crucial for Ukraine’s future EU membership and anti-corruption progress.
