EU antisemitism envoy Katharina von Schnurbein slated for German interior ministry role

Katharina von Schnurbein, the EU’s current antisemitism commissioner, is expected to move to Berlin to take over the federal post.

According to multiple media outlets citing government circles, Katharina von Schnurbein, who has served as the European Union’s antisemitism commissioner since 2015, is being considered for the German federal antisemitism coordinator role. The federal cabinet is set to vote on the nomination on Wednesday, and the move could occur before the month ends, shifting her base from Brussels to Berlin. While the Federal Ministry of the Interior has not officially verified the story, it confirmed that Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt will present a recommendation to the cabinet in due course.

The post has remained unfilled since Felix Klein departed at the end of August to become Germany’s ambassador to the OECD in Paris. In the interim, Parliamentary State Secretary Christoph de Vries has been handling the responsibilities on an interim basis, a delay that has drawn criticism amid rising antisemitism concerns in Germany.

Why it matters

The appointment could shape Germany's national response to growing antisemitism.
