EU approves €632 million aid package for displaced and crisis-affected regions
The European Union will allocate €380 million to Sub-Saharan Africa and €252 million from its emergency reserve to support displaced peoples and communities hit by conflict, epidemics and natural disasters.
At a UN General Assembly address, Ursula von der Leyen said the EU’s latest aid package responds to the growing challenges of conflict, extreme weather and rising living costs. The plan earmarks €380 million for Sub-Saharan Africa to protect vulnerable migrants, support voluntary return, and strengthen migration governance. An additional €252 million from the EU’s emergency aid reserve will be directed to communities affected by forced displacement, epidemics and natural catastrophes, covering the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Ukraine as winter approaches.
The package also includes modest funding to foster stability in the crisis-hit Great Lakes region and to assist the Democratic Republic of Congo in fighting the Ebola outbreak in its east. Overall, the EU aims to support both displaced populations and the host communities that receive them.
