EU awards innovation funding to Norwegian offshore wind and carbon capture projects

The European Union's innovation fund has granted financial support to Aker Solutions, Aker BP and Sirona Technologies for offshore wind and carbon capture initiatives in Norway.

The EU innovation fund has approved grants for three Norwegian companies—Aker Solutions, Aker BP and Sirona Technologies—to advance offshore wind and carbon capture technologies. Aker Solutions plans to build a fully automated production line for wind-turbine components on Stord. Aker BP, together with Höegh, will develop a cost-effective method to transfer captured CO₂ directly from vessels to permanent seabed storage, replacing on-shore terminals.

Sirona Technologies will install a container-based system near Bergen to extract CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. Climate minister Sigrun Aasland said the projects showcase Norway’s advanced climate-solution capabilities and, together with national support, should help achieve significant emission cuts. The EU’s innovation fund has allocated billions of euros across dozens of European climate projects, with the Norwegian awards representing a notable share.

Why it matters

EU funding boosts Norway’s offshore clean-energy projects, accelerating climate-tech deployment and emission reductions.
