EU Commission blocks Polish funding for MAN Trucks plant expansion
The European Commission has ruled that Poland's €26 million aid for expanding MAN Trucks' Niepołomice factory breaches EU state-aid rules, preventing the disbursement.
Poland planned to provide roughly €26 million (PLN 116 million) to MAN Trucks Sp. z o.o. to expand its factory in Niepołomice, aiming to boost jobs in the less-developed Małopolskie region. The European Commission opened an in-depth investigation in July 2025 to verify whether the aid complied with EU State aid regulations. While the initial assessment suggested potential economic benefits, the Commission later determined that Poland could not demonstrate that the funding was necessary for MAN Trucks to locate the investment in Poland, nor that the amount was the minimum required.
Consequently, the aid was judged disproportionate and not a genuine incentive, violating the Guidelines on Regional State Aid. As a result, Poland is barred from implementing the financial support.
Why it matters
The decision stops a major public subsidy, highlighting EU enforcement of fair competition and regional aid rules.
