EU Commission Engages Google Over €1 Billion Antitrust Penalties and Remedy Plans

The European Commission confirmed it is holding talks with Google about how the company will respond to the €1 billion fines imposed in July.

At a press briefing, the European Commission announced ongoing dialogue with Google about the company's response to the €1 billion in fines levied in July for favoring its own services in shopping, hotel, transport and sports searches, as well as for restrictive practices on Google Play. The regulator noted that Google has started to alter its search rankings and has introduced changes to the fees charged to app developers.

The Commission expects Google to comply with recommendations that require non-discriminatory treatment of rivals and to allow developers to direct users away from its store within 60 days. A thorough assessment of the measures will be carried out, including input from market operators and third parties. The spokesperson, Thomas Regnier, emphasized that the outcome of the talks cannot be predicted at this stage.

Why it matters

The talks determine whether Google will fully comply with EU antitrust rulings affecting online search and app markets.
