EU Commission greenlights new aid tranche for Ukraine, including Patriot missile purchases

The European Commission announced the approval of a new disbursement from its multi-year financial assistance programme for Ukraine. This tranche includes resources specifically allocated for the procurement of Patriot air-defence missiles, after EU members agreed to relax the usual requirement that aid be spent on EU-manufactured gear. The broader package also covers a range of defence needs such as additional air-defence systems, ammunition, drones and electronic-warfare equipment, with the aim of strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian attacks.

Repayment of the underlying loan will depend on Russia paying war-damage reparations; otherwise, the guarantor EU states will assume the cost, with a few countries opting out of the guarantee. Ukrainian defence officials say the newly released funds could eventually enable the purchase of roughly a thousand Patriot missiles, though most deliveries are expected in the coming years.
