EU Commission recommends lifting ban on Brazilian poultry and honey

The European Commission has advised EU members to allow Brazilian chicken and honey back into the single market, pending a vote in November.

The European Commission, through spokesperson Eva Hrnčířová, has put forward a recommendation that EU countries lift one outlet prohibition on Brazilian poultry and honey. A vote among member states is scheduled for the middle of November, and insiders expect the measure to be approved because no country voiced formal opposition. The discussion centered on the scope of audits and veterinary controls, with the Commission stating that inspectors have verified compliance with EU antibiotic rules.

While the ban on Brazilian beef remains in place, the poultry and honey sectors are poised to return to European markets. Polish meat producers, however, doubt that a single audit guarantees lasting change and are urging regular monitoring. The move follows pressure from EU lawmakers and domestic agricultural groups concerned about food safety standards.

Why it matters

Re-opening the market could affect EU food prices and safety standards for consumers.
