EU Commission says it will keep watching Spain's anti-corruption efforts after recent pardon

The European Commission announced it will continue closely monitoring Spain’s implementation of EU anti-corruption rules following the pardon of Laura Borrás.

After the pardon of Laura Borrás, the European Commission confirmed it will keep a close watch on Spain’s adherence to the EU anti-corruption directive, whose national transposition deadline is June 2028. The Commission also received a written request concerning pending pardons for former state prosecutor Álvaro García Ortiz and former transport minister José Luis Ábalos, and acknowledged the information provided. It reiterated that fighting corruption is a top priority and that a new EU anti-corruption strategy is being drafted for adoption before year-end. The Commission will continue its annual assessment of the rule of law in all member states, including Spain, and will cooperate with Spanish authorities on the upcoming 2027 rule-of-law report.
