EU data regulator urges smart glasses to visibly indicate recording

The European Data Protection Board called for wearable cameras to include clear visual or audio cues when capturing video, photos or sound.

The European Data Protection Board issued an advisory opinion urging manufacturers of connected eyewear to ensure that any video, photo or audio capture is clearly signalled to nearby individuals. Proposed solutions range from illuminated LEDs and sound cues to voice-activated alerts, discreet smartphone notifications, or a uniquely identifiable frame design. Board president Anu Talus highlighted that such visible indicators are essential for safeguarding privacy in public spaces.

While the recommendation is not legally binding, it seeks to influence industry practices and upcoming EU regulations. The board plans to monitor compliance and may issue further guidance as the market evolves. Stakeholders are expected to consider these suggestions when developing next-generation wearable devices.

Why it matters

Clear recording signals protect privacy by informing people when they are being filmed by smart glasses.
