EU defence chief calls for a ‘peace through strength’ plan centred on Ukraine

European Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said the EU’s peace approach for Ukraine relies on bolstering Ukrainian military strength with European support.

Andrius Kubilius, the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, outlined a peace framework that hinges on strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities. He argued that European assistance is essential for Kyiv to secure a just settlement and that ongoing sanctions should cripple Russia’s energy revenues. While acknowledging the United States’ similar rhetoric, Kubilius suggested Washington may view the formula differently.

He called for an autonomous European peace strategy, stressing that reliance on U.S. policy is no longer viable. The commissioner also highlighted recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities as a key sanction tool. Overall, he positioned the EU as the primary backer of Ukraine’s security and diplomatic efforts.

Why it matters

The EU’s stance could shape future aid and sanctions, influencing the course of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
