EU designates ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox as very large platforms under new DSA rules
The European Commission has classified ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox as “very large” online services, subjecting them to the strictest Digital Services Act obligations.
The European Commission announced that ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox have been designated as very large online services, invoking the most rigorous provisions of the Digital Services Act. ChatGPT received the “very large online search engine” label, while Reddit and Roblox were each classified as “very large online platforms,” reflecting their user bases of at least 45 million average monthly EU users. The new status obliges the three services to adhere to stricter rules on illegal content, protection of minors, and electoral integrity, and to submit detailed data to the Commission, undergo yearly independent audits, and allow limited researcher access.
They must demonstrate compliance within a four-month window. With these additions, the EU now oversees 28 services at this highest level, following earlier designations of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram.
