EU envoy urges deeper Taiwan partnership on disaster resilience and civil protection
The EU’s senior representative in Taiwan called for expanded cooperation to strengthen disaster preparedness for both societies during a workshop in Taipei.
At an EU-funded workshop in Taipei, Lutz Güllner, chief of the European Economic and Trade Office, emphasized that cooperation on disaster readiness is vital for both the European Union and Taiwan amid geopolitical uncertainty. He pointed to Europe’s enhanced civil protection mechanisms following the war in Ukraine and expressed admiration for Taiwan’s established disaster-response models. Güllner stressed that collaboration should involve not only governments but also civil society, communities, and volunteers to foster a genuine culture of resilience.
The event, hosted by the Forward Alliance, also featured Paul Wardenga of Samaritan International, who said the forum will enable Taiwanese and European NGOs to exchange knowledge on volunteer management and training. Both speakers framed the partnership as mutually beneficial, aiming to boost preparedness for future emergencies.
