EU Industry Ministers Push New Chips Act 2.0 to Boost Semiconductor Sovereignty
European Union industry ministers debated the proposed Chips Act 2.0, aiming to strengthen semiconductor production, research and supply-chain security while keeping international cooperation.
At a meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council in Brussels, industry ministers examined the Chips Act 2.0, a proposal intended to build on the original 2026 chips policy. The plan covers the entire semiconductor value chain, from advanced to mainstream chips, and calls for greater production capacity, research funding and supply-chain safeguards. Ministers highlighted the need to cut strategic dependencies without pursuing total technological self-sufficiency, stressing the importance of continued international cooperation.
The proposal, which follows €52 billion of prior investment and the creation of roughly 46,000 jobs, still requires approval by both the European Parliament and the Council, with discussions slated to continue on investment, skills and security aspects.
