EU intelligence says no evidence Russia is planning NATO attack

European intelligence services have concluded there is no evidence of a Russian preparation for a military assault on NATO members, according to a senior EU official speaking on condition of anonymity. The statement came after U.S. outlets reported that CIA Director John Ratcliffe, during a trip to Moscow, urged Russia not to strike the alliance, and that one outlet suggested a possible limited test of NATO could be contemplated in coming years.

The EU official emphasized that the assessment of no imminent attack has not changed, but acknowledged ongoing Russian efforts to cause trouble for European states through hybrid warfare, cyber incidents, drone incursions and disinformation. The official reiterated the EU’s continued support for Ukraine since the 2022 invasion and warned that such non-conventional attacks are likely to persist. The Kremlin, on the same day, dismissed the speculation about a planned attack as scare stories.
