EU launches probe into foreign-run disinformation fueling recent French riots

EU regulators are investigating online foreign interference and disinformation campaigns linked to recent violent protests in France and elsewhere.

EU regulatory bodies have opened a probe into possible foreign-run online interference and disinformation surrounding the recent riots in France and similar outbreaks across Europe. Security officials say pro-Russian and far-right accounts, previously involved in disinformation, posted violent footage to heighten chaos, while Iran and Algeria are also under suspicion. The European Commission met with French authorities and discussed cooperation with platforms such as X, TikTok and Instagram to curb algorithmic amplification of extremist content.

Italy’s defence minister blamed a “hybrid war” using TikTok and YouTube, and Belgium is also reviewing TikTok’s role. Platforms like Amazon and Vinted have been urged to block sales of goods linked to looted items, with Vinted claiming immediate action. Experts note that while foreign actors may be trying to amplify dissent, the primary drivers appear to be domestic political radicalisation.

Why it matters

Disinformation can inflame real-world violence, so understanding and limiting foreign meddling is crucial for public safety.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Both camps report the EU probe into foreign-run disinformation around the French riots, but centrist coverage stresses the role of foreign actors and platform amplification, while right-leaning coverage highlights the lack of definitive proof linking Russia and focuses on the scale of the protests.

CENTER

Centrist coverage frames the story as a probe into foreign-run disinformation fueling the riots, emphasizing alleged pro-Russian, Iranian and Algerian influence and urging platforms to curb algorithmic amplification.

RIGHT

Right-leaning coverage frames the story as an investigation into possible foreign influence but stresses that no conclusive evidence ties Russia to the riots and notes the large number of participants and arrests.

The right emphasises

  • probe into possible foreign influence
  • no definitive proof linking Russia to the riots
  • scale of the unrest (≈550,000 participants, >2,400 arrests)
