EU leader Kaja Kallas blames US of urging Ukraine to accept Putin's terms
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas accused the United States of pressuring Ukraine to surrender on conditions favorable to Vladimir Putin during Oslo peace talks.
Kaja Kallas told the European Parliament that US diplomats have spent nearly two years urging Ukraine to surrender on terms that primarily serve Vladimir Putin. She claimed Europe’s backing of Kyiv is the reason the country has resisted those demands and stressed the need for European representatives at the negotiating table to counterbalance a US stance she sees as increasingly pro-Moscow. Kallas cited recent Russian drone attacks near Romania and Bulgaria and condemned Moscow’s blockade of the Black Sea, its manipulation of food supplies and a looming famine.
She warned that Russia’s refusal to agree to an energy ceasefire and its intensified bombing ahead of winter undermine any durable peace. While US-Europe relations have soured after a diesel deal and eased sanctions, Brussels says continued engagement with Washington remains essential for Ukraine’s interests. Senior officials from the EU, NATO and several member states attended the Oslo talks.
Why it matters
The accusation highlights growing EU-US friction over how to end the Ukraine war and could reshape diplomatic strategies.
