EU leaders denounce Libya's ratification of Turkey-Libya maritime pact, back Greece and Cyprus
The European Commission President and the European Council President condemned Libya's parliament for approving a Turkey-Libya maritime agreement, calling it illegal and expressing solidarity with Greece and Cyprus.
Following the Libyan parliament's approval of a so-called Memorandum of Understanding with Turkey on Mediterranean maritime boundaries, the heads of the European Commission and the European Council released a joint declaration. Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa described the agreement as a violation of the sovereign rights of other nations and incompatible with the law of the sea, deeming it null and void. They reminded that the EU's stance on the matter was clearly set out by the European Council in 2019 and remains unchanged.
The statement also reaffirmed the EU's solidarity with Greece and Cyprus, both of which oppose the Turkey-Libya deal. Additionally, the EU warned against any foreign intervention in Libya's internal affairs, emphasizing its commitment to regional stability.
Why it matters
The EU's rejection highlights escalating maritime disputes in the Mediterranean and its support for allies Greece and Cyprus.
