EU leaders reshape budget amid funding disputes and rising Russian tensions

European Council president António Costa will rewrite the EU's 2028-2034 budget after leaders rejected the Irish presidency's plan, while Parliament prepares votes on the short-term 2027 budget and Erasmus+ funding.

European Council president António Costa is set to overhaul the EU's multi-year budget for 2028-2034 after member-state leaders rejected the proposal put forward by the Irish Council presidency. Meanwhile, the European Parliament in Strasbourg will deliberate on the 2027 short-term budget, with a possible €2.7 bn increase to expand Erasmus+, support agriculture, and address climate-related emergencies. Additional measures include allocating €489 m for Mediterranean countries hit by storms and €1.1 m to retrain workers displaced by cuts in Finland's paper sector.

On Tuesday, MEPs will discuss how to respond to repeated Russian drone violations of airspace over Bulgaria and Romania, followed by a Thursday vote on related sanctions. The Parliament will also demand an explanation from the European Commission for its decision to lift sanctions on Russian luxury furs shortly after imposing them.

Why it matters

The budget revisions will affect EU funding priorities, disaster aid and education programs across member states.
