EU Majority Calls for Urgent Talks on Ceuta Migrant Surge
Twenty-two EU member states urged an emergency video meeting of interior ministers to coordinate a response to tens of thousands of migrants entering Spain’s Ceuta enclave.
A coalition of 22 EU governments sent an open letter on August 1 demanding an emergency video meeting of interior ministers to address the sudden influx of tens of thousands of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The letter, driven by Italy’s prime minister and Denmark’s prime minister, called for a rapid, coordinated response, stronger Frontex involvement, and possible suspension of Schengen cooperation with Spain.
EU foreign policy chief Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the initiative, stressing the need for a lessons-learned process and noting that none of the migrants reached mainland Spain. Ireland, holding the EU rotating presidency, scheduled the meeting for August 4. Spain’s interior ministry later indicated that nearly all of the estimated 60,000 migrants who crossed the border since July 29 had departed, bringing the situation back toward normalcy. Signatories also included leaders from Germany, Hungary, Sweden and Poland, while France and Portugal did not sign.
