EU may lift Italy's excess-deficit procedure if new data falls below 3% of GDP
European Commission economist Valdis Dombrovskis said Italy could still exit the EU deficit procedure if upcoming figures show a deficit under the 3% of GDP limit.
Valdis Dombrovskis, the EU commissioner for the economy, indicated to Bloomberg that Italy still has a chance to exit the European excessive deficit procedure if its revised fiscal data for 2025 fall under the 3% of GDP ceiling. The key moment will be Istat’s release of updated national accounts on 22 September, which will provide an initial view of the deficit figure. While a reduction below the threshold could open the door for Brussels to close the procedure, the process also depends on Eurostat’s subsequent verification of the data.
Dombrovskis emphasized that the outcome is not predetermined and will hinge on both the Istat numbers and Eurostat’s certification. Until then, the most recent official estimate still places Italy just above the EU limit. The commission remains open to the prospect that a downward revision could change the situation.
