EU ministers say migrant return hub plans advancing rapidly amid rising anti-immigration sentiment

Denmark reported that the creation of migrant return centres outside the EU is moving forward very well, a claim made during the EU home affairs ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.

Greece has entered a coalition with Denmark, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands to create a return hub in Africa, a concept already being pursued by those nations. Migration Minister Thanos Plevris told Ant1 that the project will launch in the latter half of 2027, during the EU presidency semester, though the specific African country remains undisclosed. The hub will operate outside European borders, handling asylum assessments and arranging deportations for rejected applicants, differing from Italy's Albanian model.

Uganda and Rwanda have been cited as potential sites. Plevris announced plans for a meeting with the four partner states and the International Organization for Migration to discuss details of the initiative.
