EU negotiates early exit for Lagarde and overhaul of ECB leadership

EU governments are discussing an early departure for ECB President Christine Lagarde and a broader reshuffle of top ECB posts, aiming for a package deal by year-end.

In confidential discussions, EU leaders are preparing an early resignation for ECB President Christine Lagarde, possibly to be disclosed at the October policy meeting. The negotiations extend to the 2027 mandates of chief economist Philip Lane, Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel and other senior positions, with a goal of finalising the entire leadership package by the end of the year. The timing coincides with heightened global bond-market volatility and the prospect of further rate hikes if inflation remains entrenched.

Candidates being floated range from Spain's Pablo Hernández de Cos and former Dutch central-bank chief Klaas Knot to French officials such as Agnès Bénassy-Quéré and Laurence Boone, while Germany favours a German economist for the chief economist slot. A surprise entrant like François Villeroy de Galhau has also been mentioned, reflecting the complex north-south, hawk-dove dynamics shaping the succession debate.
