EU officially backs US 'Operation Economic Outcast' to tighten pressure on Iran

On Thursday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the European Union has officially joined the United States in the Operation Economic Outcast campaign, which seeks to isolate Iran financially. The EU listed Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic-missile programmes, regional interference, and alleged backing of Russia’s war in Ukraine as justification for the step. At the same time, Brussels emphasized that sanctions alone cannot resolve the crisis and called for continued diplomatic engagement to achieve a peace settlement and secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The bloc noted it already has broad sanctions in place and is prepared to adopt additional measures if needed, linking any further steps to Iran’s willingness to negotiate in good faith. The EU pledged close coordination with the United States, other G7 members, and international partners to maintain pressure while pursuing de-escalation. The statement underscored the balance between heightened economic pressure and the pursuit of regional stability.
