EU Omnibus X proposal sparks fierce backlash over pesticide regulation relaxations

A European Commission draft called Omnibus X, which would loosen pesticide rules, has triggered strong opposition from scientists, doctors and civil-society groups.

The European Commission is advancing a legislative bundle known as Omnibus X, which proposes unprecedented relaxations of pesticide regulations across the bloc. Central to the proposal is the intention to extend market authorisations for selected active substances indefinitely, remove regular re-assessment requirements, and broaden the scope for exemptions, including longer grace periods for banned chemicals. It also seeks to revive aerial pesticide applications, previously banned since 2009, by permitting drone use.

A group of parents whose children have been diagnosed with cancer, accompanied by the NGO Mutuelles pour la santé planétaire, addressed the European Parliament to denounce the draft. Their protest underscores the intense opposition from the scientific and medical communities, as well as civil-society organisations, who warn the measures could jeopardise public health and environmental safety.

Why it matters

The proposal could reshape EU pesticide policy, affecting public health, agriculture and environmental standards.
