EU Parliament backs new AGILE programme to speed defence innovation funding
The European Parliament approved the AGILE initiative, a scheme to accelerate funding for small defence-tech firms and startups, with a four-month fast-track process.
On Tuesday, the European Parliament gave the green light to the AGILE programme, designed to fast-track financing for small and medium-sized enterprises and startups working on cutting-edge defence solutions. The initiative promises a four-month timeline for grant disbursement, considerably quicker than existing EU research programmes. It also aims to forge stronger links between smaller innovators, large industry players and national governments to ensure that developed products meet military needs.
The Parliament approved the proposal with 536 votes supporting it and 101 opposing, including dissent from the Fidesz-KDNP delegation. Representatives from Mi Hazánk, Tisza Party and DK voted in favour. The programme still requires ratification by the Council of the European Union before it can be implemented.
