EU Parliament honors investigation into Italy's migrant detention centre deal in Albania

The Daphne Caruana Galizia journalism prize was awarded to a De Correspondent investigation exposing Italy's agreement to build a detention and asylum-processing centre on Albanian soil.

An investigative piece by Giacomo Zandonini of Italy and Maite Vermeulen of the Netherlands, published on the Dutch platform De Correspondent, won the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for journalism. The report details a bilateral agreement under which Italy will build a detention centre and an asylum-application processing centre on Albanian territory. The award was handed out in the Daphne Caruana Galizia press room of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, with President Roberta Metsola and Vice-President Pina Picierno in attendance.

Metsola emphasized the continued commitment to justice and press freedom in memory of the slain Maltese journalist. The prize annually honours work that promotes core EU principles, and past winners have covered topics ranging from secret Russian oil finance networks to missing unaccompanied migrant children.

Why it matters

The award spotlights investigative journalism that reveals cross-border migration deals and reinforces EU commitments to press freedom and human rights.
