EU parliamentarians urge Brussels to compel Meta to safeguard children online
A group of 52 MEPs wrote to the European Commission demanding that Meta be forced to change its platform design to better protect European minors.
In a letter dated Wednesday, French MEP Stephanie Yon-Courtin and 51 fellow parliamentarians urged the European Commission to act quickly and require Meta to modify the design of its services to protect children in Europe. The appeal references a recent US settlement in which Meta pledged to limit teenage use of Facebook and Instagram, including automatic night-time blocks. The EU lawmakers ask the Commission’s digital regulator to conclude its probe without delay, issue a non-compliance decision and levy fines if necessary.
They further suggest that, should Meta fall short of the US commitments, the EU should be prepared to seek a court order to temporarily block the platforms. The letter criticises the Commission for not delivering on its promise to make online spaces safer for minors.
