EU proposes a unified broadband emergency-communication network for responders
The European Commission unveiled a plan to create a continent-wide digital system that lets fire, police, medical and military services exchange data quickly across borders.
Brussels announced a draft initiative to build a pan-European communications platform for emergency responders, aiming to improve speed and safety during fires, floods, terrorist incidents or drone threats to critical infrastructure. The scheme requires EU and Schengen countries to replace legacy radio links with broadband solutions like 5G, allowing audio, photos and video to be transmitted instantly. Firefighters, police, medical teams and, where national governments choose, the armed forces would have access, while all data exchange must occur on encrypted devices.
Key components such as the core satellite backbone and other critical hardware are to be supplied by European manufacturers. The plan sets a timeline of 2030 for an initial cohort of states to go live and 2036 for the entire Union to be connected, pending approval by member states and the European Parliament.
