EU prosecutors probe EPP over Greek consultancy contracts linked to EU funds

The European Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the European People's Party over alleged misuse of EU money for Greek advisory services.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is investigating the European People's Party (EPP) for possible misallocation of EU funds to two Greek advisory firms hired by former party secretary Thanasis Bakolas. Transfer data reveal the firms earned over half a million euros within less than six months, while the European Parliament's administration declined to cover the entire sum and failed to notify the relevant investigative bodies.

OLAF’s report triggered the EPPO’s involvement, with the Belgian Federal Police’s anti-corruption unit also participating. The EPP, which receives the majority of its financing from the EU budget, had previously reimbursed a portion of the fees but retained the remainder. Both consultants have declined to comment, and the investigation’s scope and targets remain undisclosed.

Why it matters

Potential misuse of EU funds by a major European party raises concerns about transparency and accountability.
