EU public backing for fast-track Ukraine membership drops across member states

A new Bertelsmann Foundation poll shows that while 83% of Ukrainians still want rapid EU membership, only 47% of EU citizens now support a fast-track accession.

According to a recent poll by the German Bertelsmann Foundation, enthusiasm for a rapid EU accession of Ukraine has waned throughout the European Union. While a strong 83% of Ukrainians continue to favor joining the bloc within the next few years, only 47% of EU citizens now endorse a fast-track process, leaving a majority of 53% opposed. Support varies widely: Germany and Romania each show just 41% and 40% in favor, respectively, while Sweden leads with 69% approval.

The study follows a trend of decreasing backing since the conflict began in 2022. Researchers say narrowing this disparity will require more persuasive communication of Ukraine's strategic importance for European security.

Why it matters

Public sentiment shapes the political feasibility of Ukraine's EU accession, affecting future European security and integration policies.
