A sweeping EU initiative aims to ban thousands of synthetic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS, covering fluoropolymers that are integral to solar modules, wind-turbine coatings and electric-vehicle battery binders. While nations such as France, New Zealand and Denmark have already restricted specific PFAS, the EU’s broader ban could affect the supply chain for green technologies. The Performance Fluoropolymer Partnership—led by firms including 3M and Chemours—contends that restrictions would make the energy transition more expensive or even impossible.
Health groups cite evidence linking PFAS to cancer, immune suppression and developmental harms, urging bans on all uses. Some advocates, like Chem Trust, say PFAS-free alternatives for heat pumps, solar cells and turbine paints are commercially available, though Plastics Europe disputes their viability for critical applications. The controversy underscores a clash between climate-change mitigation, public-health safeguards and the chemical industry’s claim of essentiality.
