EU releases €2.86 billion in military aid to Ukraine ahead of summit
The European Union transferred €2.86 billion in defense funding to Ukraine on Oct 14, just before the European Council summit.
The European Union disbursed €2.86 billion in military assistance to Ukraine on Oct 14, covering drones, air-defence systems, missiles, radars, electronic-warfare gear and ammunition. This payment is a tranche of the bloc’s €90 billion support loan, with €18.26 billion already allocated for Kyiv’s defence needs through 2026. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the funds address Ukraine’s most urgent operational requirements as Russia steps up aerial attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on Telegram that the money will strengthen Ukraine, and he is expected to join the European Council summit the next day, where the war will dominate the agenda. The EU plans additional disbursements before the end of the year, pending Kyiv’s submission of receipts for the approved €10 billion spending plan.
Why it matters
The funding bolsters Ukraine’s defence as it faces intensified Russian attacks, influencing the upcoming EU summit agenda.
