EU road deaths fall in 2025, but Romania remains among the highest fatality rates
The European Commission released final 2025 road-fatality data showing a 3 % drop from the previous year, yet Romania stayed in the EU’s second-worst position.
The European Commission published its final statistics for road fatalities in 2025, indicating a three percent reduction from the 2024 total and a fifteen percent decline since 2019. The data confirm that Sweden and Denmark maintain the safest roads in the Union, with the lowest deaths per million people. In contrast, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia still report the highest fatality rates among EU members.
Early 2026 data show a positive trend, with a larger number of countries achieving more than a five-percent drop in road deaths during the first half of the year than those experiencing rises. Commission officials said they will keep close watch on these patterns and assist nations in addressing emerging safety concerns. Sustainable transport commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized the goal of making every journey across Europe safe for all travelers.
