EU says gas supply remains secure despite historically low storage levels

The European Commission announced that the Union's gas supply chain remains reliable despite storage levels falling beneath long-term norms. This assurance followed a meeting of the Gas Coordination Group, a forum that gathers the Commission, EU governments and industry participants to monitor market conditions ahead of the 2026-2027 winter season. Preliminary findings from the European Network of Gas Transmission System Operators will be incorporated into an upcoming winter-preparation report.

Regulators also highlighted that the EU's supply-security rules guarantee gas for protected consumers in the event of severe disruptions. While geopolitical tensions and market swings persist, the Commission noted that diversification of sources and increased LNG capacity have reduced reliance on Russian gas since the 2022 conflict.
