EU subjects ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox to stricter Digital Services Act rules

On August 31, the European Commission placed ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox on its roster of “very large” digital services, triggering heightened oversight under the Digital Services Act. Each service reported more than 45 million monthly active users in the 27-member bloc, giving them a four-month period to comply with new duties such as evaluating systemic risks, mitigating illegal content, protecting minors and safeguarding fundamental rights.

Brussels also qualified ChatGPT as a search engine for regulatory purposes. EU technology chief Henna Virkkunen said the measures reflect the platforms’ substantial impact on citizens, while Lena-Maria Boswald of the think-tank Interface warned the ruling could become a benchmark for future EU AI governance. The expanded scrutiny follows earlier actions against other major platforms, including fines on TikTok and X, underscoring the EU’s broader strategy to tighten rules on large online intermediaries.
