EU to release €3.3 billion for Ukrainian missiles and drones after von der Leyen talks with Zelenskyy
The European Commission will disburse €3.3 billion to Ukraine for missile and drone purchases, announced by Ursula von der Leyen following a call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a statement posted on X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will release €3.3 billion for Ukraine’s purchase of missiles and drones, a decision made after a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She highlighted the ongoing Russian bombardment of Kyiv, which has caused 20 injuries, among them two children, according to the city mayor Vitalij Kličko. The funding follows the EU’s recent approval allowing Kyiv to procure PAC-3 missiles for the U.S. Patriot air-defence system from an EU loan.
Von der Leyen added that the remaining resources of the SAFE financial tool will be used to start a new joint defence programme between the EU and Ukraine, building on the Freya anti-missile system being developed by Fire Point and European partners. She reiterated that EU assistance extends beyond defence, referencing the cumulative €-scale support already provided to Ukraine.
Why it matters
The funding boosts Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian attacks and deepens EU-Ukraine security cooperation.
