EU urges Washington to scrap planned sanctions on the International Criminal Court
The European Union called on the United States to reverse its decision to sanction the International Criminal Court, emphasizing the court’s role in the rules-based order.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the EU asked the US to abandon the sanctions it intends to impose on the International Criminal Court. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the court is a cornerstone of international law and must operate without external pressure. She condemned any attempts to target the court or its officials and pledged full EU support to protect its staff and cooperating partners.
Why it matters
The EU’s appeal reflects a clash over the legitimacy of the ICC and could shape future US-EU relations on international law.
