European Central Bank receives 1,200 design proposals for new euro banknotes
The ECB opened a competition for fresh euro banknote designs, attracting 1,200 submissions from designers across Europe.
The European Central Bank announced a redesign of euro banknotes to incorporate new security measures and modern visual themes. A call for proposals yielded 1,200 entries from designers throughout Europe, who were guided by two main motifs: "European Culture" and "Birds and Rivers." The selection panel, comprising designers, psychologists and neuroscientists, examined aspects such as numeral size, colour intensity and representation of European people and achievements.
While the competition attracted five Estonian designers, none advanced to the final shortlist. The ECB will also solicit public input before finalising the designs, and the new notes will circulate alongside one outlet's series. Visuals are available on the ECB’s website.
