European Council Committee Calls for Extending Voting Rights to Migrants
A parliamentary committee of the Council of Europe adopted a report urging that migrants be allowed to vote in national elections, though the recommendation is non-binding.
The Assembly's AS/Mig committee voted to endorse a report that recommends granting migrants the right to vote in national polls across member states. Although the recommendation carries no legal weight, analysts say it mirrors a continent-wide shift toward greater political inclusion of non-citizens. Arkadiusz Jabłoński, a scholar at the Catholic University of Lublin, cautioned that left-wing parties could view the proposal as a way to attract additional supporters, even as it may be politically risky.
Daniel Milewski, a member of Poland's delegation to the Council of Europe, described the initiative as a classic example of eroding nation-state structures and warned it could become a tool for political pressure on states defending their sovereignty. The report also signals an upcoming debate within the Assembly on migrant voting rights.
