European Leagues body files EU competition complaint against FIFA over women’s calendar
The Association of European Leagues has expanded its complaint to the European Commission, accusing FIFA of abusive conduct that endangers the financial viability of women’s leagues and player health.
On Tuesday, the Association of European Leagues (EL) broadened its grievance to the European Commission, filing a formal complaint that accuses FIFA of abusive conduct regarding the international women’s match calendar. The EL’s document, delivered to the Competition Directorate, argues that FIFA’s simultaneous regulatory and organisational functions generate a conflict of interest that disadvantages professional women’s leagues financially and puts player health at risk.
It cites the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise project as evidence of systemic bias toward FIFA’s own commercial interests. Citing EU competition jurisprudence, the EL demands that FIFA’s calendar decisions be made transparently, objectively and proportionally, with league representation included. The association calls on the Commission to act to safeguard the growth and sustainability of women’s professional football and is ready to cooperate with any investigation.
