European markets climb as Julius Baer rebounds and oil prices dip
European shares rose, led by a 9% jump in Julius Baer after Swiss regulator Finma ended its enforcement action, while oil prices slipped below $105.
European equities edged higher, with the Stoxx Europe 600 up 0.6% by early afternoon. Gains were driven by a 3.5% rise in ASML and a 9% rally in Julius Baer after Finma concluded its enforcement procedure, allowing the bank to seek approval for share buybacks. Oil and gas firms lagged as Brent crude fell below $105 a barrel once a Saudi pipeline resumed shipments.
Market participants also scaled back bets on an ECB rate hike in October, now seeing only a 34% probability of any increase. Swiss chocolatier Lindt & Spruengli slid 8% after issuing a second sales-growth downgrade for 2026. Analysts warned that without fresh positive catalysts, markets may struggle amid lingering geopolitical risks.
