European Parliament Approves Price Cap on Emission Permits for Transport and Buildings

The European Parliament voted to limit the rise of carbon-allowance prices for road transport and building heating, pending ratification by member states.

Lawmakers in the European Parliament have adopted a measure that will curb the increase of prices for emission allowances used by the road-transport sector and building heating. The rule will take effect only after all EU member states give their approval. It is part of the EU Emissions Trading System, which charges firms for each tonne of CO₂ they emit, encouraging investment in cleaner technologies.

Why it matters

Capping allowance prices aims to balance climate goals with economic costs for transport and building sectors across the EU.
