European sweep nets suspects behind million-plus fake smartphone scheme and tax fraud

Since Tuesday morning, customs, tax investigators and police have searched 160 sites, focusing on Germany, as part of a continent-wide operation against a suspected fraud ring. The group allegedly marketed counterfeit Samsung smartphones as new devices, defrauding German consumers and avoiding dozens of millions of euros in sales tax. Over the weekend, several alleged leaders of the network were detained on charges of organized tax evasion and forming a criminal association.
