Eutelsat and OroraTech to equip future satellites with up to 96 infrared fire sensors
Eutelsat and German thermal-imaging firm OroraTech announced a partnership to place up to 96 infrared sensors on upcoming low-orbit satellites.
At the International Space Summit in Paris, Eutelsat and OroraTech revealed a joint venture to install up to 96 infrared fire-detection sensors on future low-Earth-orbit satellites. The deal currently reserves slots for 48 payloads, with an additional 48 available as an option, meaning the devices will share platforms with Eutelsat's regular communications satellites. This integration strategy lets OroraTech expand its monitoring reach without launching a dedicated satellite constellation.
The company estimates the move could boost its observation capacity by roughly 500%, contingent on the satellites being launched. While the primary goal is faster forest-fire detection, the sensors will also track critical infrastructure and maritime activity, providing earlier alerts to relevant authorities. The sensors are not yet in orbit; their deployment hinges on Eutelsat's upcoming satellite launches.
