Evacuation zones expanded to nearly 200 homes as Pear Lake blaze spreads
Authorities in two regional districts have broadened evacuation orders south of the Pear Lake wildfire, now affecting almost 200 properties.
In response to the expanding Pear Lake wildfire, officials from the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District have each broadened evacuation orders, bringing the total number of affected homes to nearly 200. The Squamish-Lillooet order now includes properties adjacent to Highway 99 in the Marble Canyon area, while the Thompson-Nicola order covers additional sites along Highway 99 west of the Highway 97 intersection.
The Ts'kw'aylaxw First Nation issued similar evacuation notices for several of its reserves. The blaze, which the B.C. Wildfire Service says has consumed more than 1,647 square kilometres, has already destroyed structures on over 120 properties, primarily around Clinton, and remains most active on its western and southern edges. The provincial government has kept a state of emergency in place through at least Aug. 29 as nearly 130 wildfires continue to burn across the province.
Why it matters
The expanded evacuations highlight the growing threat of the Pear Lake fire to hundreds of residents and underscore the ongoing emergency across B.C.
