Ex-council member says Al Burhan clings to Sudan war to keep power

Former Sovereignty Council member Mohamed Al Faky claims Abdel Fattah Al Burhan is sustaining the conflict to remain the head of Sudan’s military and de facto authority.

Mohamed Al Faky, a former civilian member of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, said that Abdel Fattah Al Burhan is keeping the war alive because it secures his command of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the de facto ruling body. Al Faky said Al Burhan’s legitimacy rests only on “the legitimacy of fighting” and that he will not accept peace without political arrangements that protect his authority. He also blamed the Muslim Brotherhood for fueling the conflict to return to power.

The fighting between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces has devastated a nation of 50 million, displaced roughly 14 million people and shattered the economy. Europe, represented by expert Nidal Shoukeir, insists on a civilian government and warns that continued army links to Islamist groups threaten regional stability and migration. Shoukeir called for intensified pressure, possibly including sanctions and an international probe into alleged chlorine attacks, urging the army to cooperate with investigators.

Why it matters

The statement highlights how Sudan’s war may be driven by personal power, complicating peace efforts and regional stability.
