Ex-Morgan Stanley chief lists $80 million Upper East Side mansion for sale

John Mack and his wife Christy have put their renovated Upper East Side carriage house on the market for $80 million, which could become the most expensive Manhattan townhouse ever sold.

John Mack, who led Morgan Stanley through the 2008 financial crisis, and his wife Christy are offering their Upper East Side carriage house for $80 million, a price that would set a new Manhattan townhouse record. The limestone-faced building, designed in 1902 by C.P.H. Gilbert for banker Henri P. Wertheim, was purchased in 2009 as a distressed garage and underwent a six-year, six-figure renovation that added a floor, steel reinforcement and luxury finishes.

The resulting 16,000-square-foot home features 20 rooms, bullet-proof entry, a state-of-the-art alarm system, heated floors throughout, and a snow-melt sidewalk. Inside, a private wellness club offers a hot tub, cold plunge, steam room, sauna and massage room, while a 13-seat screening room, a wine cellar for 6,319 bottles, two elevators and three terraces provide additional indulgence. A rare private curb cut gives direct garage access that can double as event space. The Macks intend to move to North Carolina, where they both grew up, after the transaction closes.

Why it matters

The sale could reset the benchmark for Manhattan townhouse prices, highlighting trends in ultra-luxury real estate.
