Ex-SpaceX engineers launch AI-driven robotic steel-fabrication startup

Three former SpaceX engineers have founded 1872, a Cincinnati-based venture that aims to automate steel-part production for infrastructure projects by 2027.

Former SpaceX engineers have created a startup called 1872, which debuted its Factory One facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 22. Their first product line will automate the fabrication of steel skids—rectangular frames that serve as portable bases for modular buildings such as AI data centers and small nuclear reactors. Dan Summers, the company's chief executive, explained that the goal is to achieve roughly 80% autonomous operation, noting that pursuing full automation may not be cost-effective.

The push for robotic production is driven by a growing deficit of qualified welders, a problem underscored by the American Welding Society’s projection of a need for hundreds of thousands of new welding professionals by 2029 and tighter immigration policies. By automating key steps, 1872 hopes to help industries build more with fewer skilled workers. The prototype plant is slated to be operational by 2027.
